This report is crafted just for you. We examine the intriguing phenomenon of 'ethical fading' and its potent influence in high-stake corporate environments, so you don't fall prey to it. You'll discover the pivotal role of internal controls and the imperativeness of a robust corporate culture in warding off unethical conduct.

By looking at the profound changes Tyco implemented in response to the scandal, we highlight how ethical conduct, coupled with transparent communication, can restore stakeholder confidence and catapult an organisation back to glory.

The Tyco International scandal, which transpired in the 2000s, remains one of the most significant instances of corporate corruption. Tyco, a prominent multinational corporation, was at the centre of this scandal, with its former CEO, Dennis Kozlowski, and former CFO, Mark Swartz, found guilty of embezzling more than $150 million through unauthorised bonuses and inflated stock sales. Extravagant personal expenditures funded by company money further exacerbated the case.

This scenario illustrates an explicit abuse of leadership power, unethical behaviour, and corruption. Kozlowski and Swartz exploited their positions and company resources for personal enrichment. They manipulated Tyco's internal controls and financial reporting systems, revealing an utter disregard for the firm's shareholders and employees. Their actions infringed both legal and ethical standards, primarily the tenets of honesty, integrity, and fairness.

Leaders, particularly in influential corporate and political roles, are held to high moral standards due to the gravity of their responsibilities. They are entrusted with the stewardship of company resources and make decisions that profoundly impact employees, shareholders, and other stakeholders. Ethical leadership is indispensable for cultivating a culture of integrity within an organisation, promoting sustainable business practices, and upholding the firm's reputation and public trust (Brown & Treviño, 2006). Failure to regain stakeholders' trust, especially from employees, clients, and investors, can lead to a company's downfall.
